If You Are on the MLTSSL (Long-Term) Stream
If your occupation is on the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List, 5 years in Australia on the 482 puts you in a very strong position:
You likely already qualify for permanent residency. The 186 Employer Nomination Scheme (Temporary Residence Transition stream) requires only 3 years of employment with your sponsoring employer. If you've been with the same employer for 5 years, you may have been eligible for the 186 TRT for 2 years already.
Options at the 5-year mark on the MLTSSL:
Apply for the 186 TRT if you haven't already — you're well past the 3-year threshold
Apply for the 189 or 190 via SkillSelect, using your Australian work experience to boost your points (Australian work experience adds up to 20 bonus points for 5+ years)
Continue renewing your 482 if your employer wants to retain you while you pursue a different PR pathway
If You Are on the STSOL (Short-Term) Stream
The short-term stream 482 visa is more restrictive:
Maximum 2 years per grant, with limited renewal options
No direct pathway to the 186 TRT stream
After 4 years (two grants), further renewal onshore is generally not available
If you reach 5 years on a short-term 482, you likely either:
Applied for the 186 Direct Entry stream (if you have the skills assessment and experience to qualify)
Changed to a different visa category
Left Australia
