What Is the South Africa Volunteer Permit?
The Volunteer Permit is a South African immigration permit that authorises a foreigner to perform voluntary, unpaid work for an organisation registered in South Africa. It is issued under the Immigration Act and is typically valid for the duration of the volunteer placement, up to a maximum period set by the Department of Home Affairs (DHA).
Without a Volunteer Permit, working — even unpaid — for a South African organisation is considered a breach of your visa conditions.
What Counts as Volunteering?
For immigration purposes, "volunteer work" must be:
Unpaid — you cannot receive a salary, stipend, or living allowance that constitutes remuneration
For a registered South African organisation — typically a non-profit organisation (NPO), NGO, conservation project, or registered charity
Not displacing a South African worker — the work you do should be supplementary to, not a replacement for, local employment
Common types of volunteer work approved under this permit:
Wildlife conservation and anti-poaching projects
NGO work in community development, healthcare, or education
Environmental research and conservation
Religious or missionary work
Humanitarian aid and disaster relief
Who Can Apply?
Any foreign national who:
Has been offered a place as a volunteer with a registered South African organisation
Can support themselves financially without working commercially
Does not intend to engage in paid employment while in South Africa
Documents Required
Completed DHA application form (BI-1738)
Acceptance letter from the host organisation confirming the volunteer role and its unpaid nature
Proof that the organisation is registered (NPO certificate or Companies and Intellectual Property Commission (CIPC) registration)
Proof of medical insurance valid in South Africa
Financial proof showing you can support yourself
Police clearance certificate from your home country
Valid passport (with at least 30 days validity beyond your intended stay)
Yellow fever vaccination certificate (if applicable)
How Long Is the Volunteer Permit Valid?
The permit is typically issued for the duration of the volunteer placement, with a maximum of 3 years. It is not indefinitely renewable — if you wish to continue volunteering after the initial permit expires, you must re-apply.
Can You Work While on a Volunteer Permit?
No. The Volunteer Permit only authorises unpaid voluntary work. Taking up paid employment requires a separate Work Permit or Critical Skills Permit.
Application Process
Applications are submitted to a South African embassy or consulate in your home country (offshore applications) or through VFS Global if you are already in South Africa on a valid visa.
Processing times vary but typically range from 6–12 weeks.
