South Africa is set to take an important step towards a more modern, secure and efficient immigration system with the official launch of its new Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) platform on Wednesday, 12 August 2026.
President Cyril Ramaphosa will launch the system at OR Tambo International Airport alongside the Minister of Home Affairs, Dr Leon Schreiber.
The ETA follows a successful pilot conducted during South Africa’s G20 Presidency and will form a central part of the Department of Home Affairs’ digital transformation programme. It is intended to make travel to South Africa quicker and simpler for legitimate visitors, while strengthening the country’s ability to manage border security.
The new system will combine biometric verification, machine-learning technology and the upgraded Electronic Movement Control System, known as eMCS 2.0. Together, these tools are designed to improve the way travellers are processed and screened before and at South Africa’s borders.
For tourists, business travellers and prospective investors, the introduction of the ETA signals a move towards a more streamlined immigration experience. For South Africa, it supports a stronger balance between facilitating travel and protecting national security.
The launch also represents a major milestone for the Department of Home Affairs and the Border Management Authority. Government has indicated that the broader digital immigration ecosystem will help improve service delivery, support economic growth and position South Africa as a more accessible destination for international visitors.
The official programme will include a live walkthrough of the ETA system and a guided tour led by Border Management Authority Commissioner Dr Michael Masiapato.
