If you have significant personal wealth and want to live in South Africa without working or investing in a business, the Financially Independent Permit may be the right route. Here's what you need to qualify.
What Is the Financially Independent Permit?
South Africa's Financially Independent Permit (Section 31(1)(a) of the Immigration Act) is designed for high-net-worth individuals who wish to live in South Africa permanently without needing to work or run a business.
Unlike the Retirement Visa (which requires ongoing passive income) or the Business Permit (which requires active investment), the Financially Independent Permit is based primarily on your demonstrated net worth.
The Key Requirement:
To qualify, you must demonstrate a minimum net worth of ZAR 12 million and make a payment to the Department of Home Affairs of R120,000.00
This net worth can include:
Property assets (in South Africa or abroad)
Investment portfolios and retirement funds
Cash and bank deposits
Business ownership stakes (with valuation evidence)
The net worth must be evidenced through independent professional valuations — your own declaration alone is insufficient.
What Does the Permit Allow?
The Financially Independent Permit allows you to:
Live in South Africa indefinitely (on the permit term, renewable)
Travel freely in and out of the country
Invest in South African businesses (passive investment, not active management)
Access private healthcare and education services
The permit does not allow you to take up employment or manage a business as a daily working director.
How Does It Compare to the Retirement Visa?
The Retirement Visa is more accessible (lower threshold) but is income-based. The FIP is for individuals with significant capital who may not have consistent monthly income streams.
