What Is South Africa's Digital Nomad Visa?
South Africa's Remote Work Visa (commonly called the Digital Nomad Visa) was introduced under amendments to the Immigration Act, designed to attract foreign remote workers who earn their income from overseas clients or employers while living in South Africa.
It allows qualifying individuals to reside in South Africa for up to 3 years (the initial visa is granted for up to 1 year, renewable for up to a total of 3 years).
Who Qualifies?
To be eligible for the South Africa Digital Nomad Visa, you must:
Be employed by a company based outside South Africa or be a freelancer/contractor with clients outside South Africa
Earn a minimum monthly income of ZAR 36,000 (approximately USD $1,900 or GBP £1,500 at current rates) from your foreign employment or clients
Not be engaged in any paid employment within South Africa itself
Have comprehensive medical insurance valid in South Africa
Pass a police clearance check

Valid passport (minimum 30 days validity beyond your intended stay)
Proof of employment or service contracts from foreign employer/clients
Bank statements showing consistent income meeting the ZAR 54,000/month threshold
Employment contract or proof of freelance income (invoices, contracts, Upwork/Fiverr earnings statements)
Comprehensive medical insurance certificate valid in South Africa
Police clearance from your home country (apostilled if required)
Proof of accommodation in South Africa (lease agreement or hotel booking for initial period)
Yellow fever certificate (if travelling from an affected country)
How Long Is the Visa Valid?
Initial grant: Up to 12 months
Renewal: Renewable for a further 12 months, then a further 12 months — maximum 3 years total
The visa does not automatically convert to permanent residency
Can Your Family Join You?
Yes — immediate family members (spouse/life partner and dependent children) can accompany you on accompanying visas, provided you meet the financial requirements to support them.
Tax Implications
This is an important area to understand. As a South African visa holder, you may have South African tax obligations depending on your residency status and the tax treaties between South Africa and your home country. South Africa also offers a Foreign Income Exemption for South African tax residents earning foreign income — but this applies differently to remote work visa holders who are not South African tax residents.
