If your profession is on South Africa's Critical Skills list, you skip the Labour Market Test entirely — making this the fastest and most straightforward work permit route. Here's the full 2025 guide.
What Makes the Critical Skills Permit Different?
The Critical Skills Work Permit (Section 19A of the Immigration Act) is designed for occupations the South African government has identified as scarce or critical to the country's economic development. The major advantage: no Labour Market Test required.
This makes it significantly faster and less burdensome for both applicants and employers than the General Work Permit.

Requirements for the Critical Skills Permit
Even without a Labour Market Test, applicants must:
Hold a relevant qualification for the critical skill (evaluated by SAQA or the relevant professional body)
Provide proof of professional registration in their home country (e.g. engineering council membership, medical registration)
Register with the relevant South African professional body within 12 months of arrival — e.g. the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA), Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA), or South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA)
Provide police clearances and medical certificate
Have a job offer (or declaration of intent to seek employment in the critical skill)
Do You Need a Job Offer?
Technically, you can apply without a confirmed job offer — the act provides for a Critical Skills permit without employment. However, DHA in practice typically expects at least a letter of intent from a prospective employer, or strong evidence of intent to work in the skill.
Duration and Renewal
The Critical Skills permit is valid for up to 3 years and is renewable. After 5 years of holding the permit, you may qualify for permanent residency under the skilled work route.
Processing Times
Critical Skills permits are generally processed faster than General Work Permits — typically 8–16 weeks through VFS Global, though DHA timelines can vary.
NWI can verify whether your qualification meets the gazetted critical skill description, manage your SAQA evaluation, and prepare your full permit application.
