The Highest-Paid Trades and Vocational Careers
1. Mining and Resources Workers
Mine workers in roles like drill and blast technicians, underground miners, and mine supervisors regularly earn AUD $120,000–$200,000+ through combination of base salary and site allowances (fly-in-fly-out arrangements to remote sites).
No degree required — experience, safety tickets, and specific equipment certifications are the primary qualifications.
2. Electricians
Licensed electricians in Australia earn AUD $80,000–$130,000 annually, with senior electricians in industrial and mining settings earning significantly more. In WA's mining regions, experienced electricians can exceed AUD $150,000.
Requires: Trade qualification + state electrical licence. Assessed by TRA for immigration.
3. Plumbers and Gas Fitters
A licensed plumber in Australia earns AUD $75,000–$120,000. Gas fitters with combined electrical qualifications are in particularly high demand.
4. Boilermakers and Welders
Especially in WA and QLD (resources sector), qualified boilermakers and structural steel workers earn AUD $90,000–$140,000, with FIFO rosters adding significantly to total income.
5. Diesel Mechanics (Heavy Vehicles)
Heavy vehicle diesel mechanics — particularly those who work on mining equipment — earn AUD $90,000–$130,000. The demand for maintaining large fleets of equipment in remote locations makes this a premium skill.
6. Construction Project Managers
While some hold degrees, many successful Australian construction project managers came up through the trades. Experienced PMs earn AUD $120,000–$200,000.
7. Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration Technicians
HVAC technicians — assessed under TRA as Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanics — earn AUD $80,000–$120,000 with strong demand in the growing commercial building sector.
8. Crane Operators and Riggers
Highly specialised trades requiring specific licences. Crane operators on major infrastructure projects can earn AUD $120,000–$180,000 including overtime and shift loadings.
