What Visas Require
For the points-tested skilled migration pathways (189, 190, 491), you need to sit an approved English test — IELTS, PTE Academic, TOEFL iBT, Cambridge C1, or OET. The minimum standard is:
Competent English: IELTS 6.0 in each of the four bands (listening, reading, writing, speaking). This is the minimum to apply for most skilled visas, but it earns zero points.
Proficient English: IELTS 7.0 in each band. Earns 10 bonus points on the points test.
Superior English: IELTS 8.0 in each band. Earns 20 bonus points — the same value as being in the optimal age bracket.
For employer-sponsored visas (482, 186), the minimum is Competent English — IELTS 5.0 in each band, or an equivalent score — unless the role is in a specific occupation category that requires higher levels.

Once you are in Australia and working, the functional English required varies enormously by role. A trades worker doing largely manual work with a small team needs conversational English to get the job done safely.
