Canada has recovered over 129% of the job losses over the COVID-19 pandemic. Beyond their ability to create growth and provide financial freedom to its residents, Canada continuously makes it easier for people to find work.
Study permits were previously limited to only working 20 hours a week during their studies, until mid-2022 when they extended the hour limit to unlimited. This policy change has advanced the labour market shortfall in 4 major industries: professional, scientific and technical services, retail, hospitality and health care.
Considering the average wage in Canada is $33.01 per hour, the hiring gains have strengthened the economy.
- Wholesale and retail trade filled over 59 000 jobs and still has over 128 000 vacancies.
- Health care and social assistance has filled over 40 000 jobs and is hiring 131 775 vacancies.
- Educational services have filled 18 000 jobs and have a hiring capacity for a further 20 180 professionals.
- Construction has filled 16 000 jobs and is looking for 79 025 vacancies to be filled.
- Other services have filled 16 000 jobs and 34 985 are still available.
All these jobs have been filled and opened in the first month of 2023. These positions are showing alarming growth for Canadians however, they are still concerned about the labour shortage. Ontario has seen the greatest increase in hiring compared to other provinces.
