According to Stuart Robert, Australia's Employment Minister, there is a skills shortage in more than 150 occupations. He stated that these positions were spread across many industries and included technicians, trade workers, machinery operators, and many others.
On Monday's Today show, Robert mentioned that there are a variety of industries with open positions that require more skilled workers.
Despite widespread predictions from economists that the figure would rise, unemployment fell from 4.9 percent to 4.6 percent in July. However, Robert cautioned that improvements in the employment rate could be misleading, and the figures would likely “jump around” for the next few months.
“In the last month we've seen unemployment dropped from 4.9 down to 4.6 but that’s got a lot to do with a drop in the participation rate so (the unemployment rate) is going to be all over the place, for the next few months,” he said.
This news comes at an exciting time in Australia, where the demand for skilled migrants is increasing rapidly.
With the aforementioned demand expected to rise in the near future, it is critical to begin working on your Australian application as soon as possible, as the skilled immigration queue will gradually but steadily grow longer over the next few months.
