The Australian Student Visa allows international students to travel to Australia and attend school, study a full-time vocational education and/or training course or undertake a full-time higher education course at university or colleges. The visa is generally issued for the duration of the course and is a multiple entry visa.
Eligibility
The Australian Student Visa is available to those who wish to further their studies in Australia. The following criteria should be met:
- Fresh out of school or currently studying or a professional looking to further their studies abroad and to upskill themselves.
- An individual with less than 5 years gap in studies
- In search of a pathway course that is recognised as a skilled shortage in Australia
- Wish to study a program that will enable you to apply for a possible post-work study visa or after graduation working visa.
Students can apply for the visa inside or outside of Australia. If applying from within Australia, a valid temporary visa that does not have any conditions placed on it is required. When submitting new visas or change of status applications, a bridging visa will be necessary.
Pathways
International students who have recently graduated can apply for graduate work stream visas, allowing them to work in Australia for up to 18 months. For those who have graduated with a degree from a university, a post-study work stream visa is available, which allows them to live and work in Australia for up to 4 years.
Validity and Financial Requirements
The Australian Student Visa is a multiple entry visa, issued for the duration of the course. Accompanying dependents will receive the same expiry date as the student visa. If the visa expires before the graduation ceremony, a visitor visa can be applied for. The financial requirements for the visa are as follows:
- Sufficient funds for travel to and from Australia
- 12 months of course fees
- 12 months of living costs for students and family members
- School fees for accompanying school-age children
The financial requirements are AUD21,041 for students or guardians, AUD7,362 for partners, and AUD3,152 for children. Alternatively, evidence of a personal annual income of at least AUD 62,222 for parents or partners in the 12 months immediately before applying can be provided. If bringing family members, parents' or partners' income must be at least AUD 72,592. If both parents are working, their combined income can be considered.
Obligations
As a student in Australia, enrolment in a registered course of study listed on the Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students (CRICOS) is required. Satisfactory course progress within each study period and attendance as required by the education provider should be maintained. Failure to adhere to these requirements may result in the cancellation of the student visa.
